Dr. Mike Heithaus is an executive dean and professor at Florida International University (FIU). He is a marine ecologist specializing in predator-prey interactions and the ecological importance of sharks and other large marine species. He conducts research using innovative technologies like drones and animal-borne cameras to study elusive marine creatures. His work in Shark Bay Australia is globally recognized for its detailed insights into the role of sharks in the ecosystem. He has published numerous scientific articles and books on shark biology and co-written science textbooks for K-8 education. Prior to his current position, he held leadership roles in marine sciences and environmental programs at FIU. Dr. Heithaus is affiliated with prestigious organizations such as the Explorers Club and the Science Advisory Committee for Pew Environment's Global Shark Program. He serves as an editor for Frontiers in Marine Science and is a board member of the Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine of Florida. He is also involved with the Zoo Miami Foundation Board of Directors and is actively engaged in educational initiatives. Before joining FIU, he worked at Mote Marine Laboratory and collaborated with National Geographic on various projects, including hosting a television series. Dr. Heithaus received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and completed his Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University.
