Nature of Work

The primary function of the Volunteer Manager is to oversee recruitment, training, and management of adult and teenage volunteers. The Volunteer Manager will use best practices in volunteer management to develop novel recruitment techniques, new volunteer opportunities, and to deliver baseline and advanced training sessions. Activities may be conducted both on and off Zoo Miami premises, during evenings, and on weekends. This position is responsible for supervising part-time Volunteer Coordinators to ensure successful delivery and tracking of Zoo Miami’s volunteer programs.

Essential Duties

  • Manage the recruitment, screening, orientation, training and evaluation of volunteers.
  • Work with the Zoo to develop partnerships, where appropriate, to develop and/or utilize volunteers to provide the public educational context, recommended and developing ongoing volunteer utilization.
  • Supervise the implementation of successful training programs for all volunteers.
  • Maintain updated records on all volunteers.
  • Set up and attends volunteer meetings. Report to staff on volunteer activities as needed.
  • Develop and implements a volunteer recognition program.
  • Manage department support staff to reach departmental goals.
  • Provide digital communication to all Volunteers and ZMF Staff through a weekly Volunteer Newsletter;
  • Supervise input into the volunteer database (Volunteer Works/Volgistics) and ensures accuracy;
  • Develop and execute plans for initiating new youth and adult volunteer programs designed to recruit and retain new volunteers;
  • Coordinate focused volunteer projects for group volunteers with other Zoo Miami departments;
  • Oversee monthly volunteer general meetings as well as annual appreciation dinners for youth and adult volunteers;
  • Prepare, manage, and submit monthly reports on program activities, grant and financial performance to Director of Education & Volunteer Services that include participation numbers and budget status;
  • Interface with Development Department in developing and writing grant proposals for volunteer programs;
  • Maintain working knowledge of current research, models, and best practices of youth and adult volunteerism;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Education, Zoology, Environmental Studies or a related field, with three to five years of supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual required in English and Spanish


  • Current Florida Driver’s License in good standing.
  • First Aid/ CPR Certified.

Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills / Reasoning Ability

Ability to compute discounts, interests, commissions, proportions rate, ratio, and percent.   Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in MS Office Applications, including MSWord, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction.
  • Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Visual Acuity:
    • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eye.
    • The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heaving equipment.
