How to Upcycle Your Springtastic Basket: Composting 101

Healthy compost provides nutrients for your indoor plants or outdoor garden. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reuse your basket as a composter.

Step 1: Gather your ingredients:

The two main components of your compost should be:

  • Browns – carbon-based materials- dead leaves, branches, twigs, and newspaper
  • Greens - nitrogen-based materials- grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, coffee grounds

Step 2: Inside your basket, mix your ingredients. Use a 2:1 ratio with more browns than greens.

Step 3: Turn/mix your compost every week or so but not every day so as to not disrupt the formation of fungi that help the breakdown process.

Step 4: When your compost mixture begins to look like soil and all fungi have broken down, it’s ready to use in your garden!
