There's always something great going on at Zoo Miami!
This year we are celebrating 50 Years of Earth Day with a Party for the Planet! We will have lots of fun conservation-themed activities for the entire family as well as fun enrichment for our animals. These conservation-themed activities are included with Zoo admission.
During Party for the Planet, guests can come free of charge if they donate a cell phone for our ECO-CELL recycling program. Free zoo entrance not valid for private events. Not only will each person donating a cellphone enter the zoo for free on either April 25 or 26, but they will also help save gorillas! Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world's endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo's out-of-control coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes for the illegal bush-meat trade. By turning in your cell phone, we can hopefully reduce the need for additional coltan … and help protect the gorillas.
Watch as some of our animals tear into their Earth Day treats. Enrichment items, activities, and environments help to physically and mentally stimulate our Zoo animals. It allows animals to demonstrate their species-typical behavior, gives them the opportunity to exercise control or choice over their environment and enhances their well-being. Enrichment is essential to animal welfare as proper nutrition and veterinary care.
