Watch as some of our animals tear into their Spring treats. Wild animals spend a large portion of their time searching for and consuming food. Here at the zoo, their diets are provided and easily accessible. Therefore, keepers use enrichment like the paper maché items, coconuts, treat bags, etc. to promote natural foraging behaviors.
Party for the Planet is Zoo Miami’s annual Earth Day celebration! We will have lots of fun conservation-themed activities for the entire family as well as fun enrichment for our animals! These conservation-themed activities are included with Zoo admission.
During Party for the Planet, guests can come free of charge if they donate a cell phone for our ECO-CELL recycling program. Free zoo entrance not valid for private events. Not only will each person donating a cellphone enter the zoo for free on these two days, but they will also help save gorillas! Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world's endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo's out-of-control coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes for the illegal bush-meat trade. By turning in your cell phone, we can hopefully reduce the need for additional coltan … and help protect the gorillas.
In addition, Lyft has partnered with Miami-Dade County and Zoo Miami to provide $5 off Lyft Shared rides to and from the Party for the Planet at Zoo Miami on April 27 and 28th in honor of Earth Day. For every five Lyft riders who use the code EARTHDAY2019, Lyft will also donate the cost of a shade tree that will be distributed to Miami Dade County residents to grow Miami's tree canopy. *Terms Apply
Watch as some of our animals tear into their Earth Day treats. Enrichment items, activities and environments help to physically and mentally stimulate our Zoo animals. It allows animals to demonstrate their species-typical behavior, gives them opportunity to exercise control or choice over their environment and enhances their well-being. Enrichment is essential to animal welfare as proper nutrition and veterinary care.
Internationally acclaimed artist, Guido Daniele, will be traveling from Italy to Miami to be featured at Zoo Miami’s “Party for the Planet” event on the weekend of April 27 and 28!
Guido is the creator of “Giving a Hand to Wildlife- the ‘Handimals’ Art of Guido Daniele,” a stunning portrayal of wildlife that he paints using the human hand as his canvas. His artwork has been featured and admired around the world and has gone viral on a variety of social media platforms. For the first time in any zoo in the Western Hemisphere, a beautiful exhibit of his artwork will be on display and he will be creating additional “Handimals” live at Zoo Miami!! He will be painting a zebra, elephant, flamingo, cheetah, and crocodile using the hands of specially selected models over the two day period in front of zoo guests during normal operating hours in the zoo entry plaza. The painting will begin at 11:00am each day. Each painting takes between one and two hours using hypoallergenic non-toxic paint that washes away easily with soap and water.
In addition to doing the live painting demonstrations, Guido will be signing the new book that is being unveiled and launched fresh from the publisher, Christy Ottaviano Books/Macmillan in New York, for the first time that weekend! The book, titled, “Handimals – Animals in Art and Nature” is authored by Silvia Lopez and is a beautiful collection of Guido’s paintings accompanied by wonderful facts about the animals depicted. Zoo Miami will be selling the books straight off the presses and Silvia and Guido will be signing them throughout the weekend!
There will be several large reproductions of Guido’s “Handimals” that will be on display at Zoo Miami for three months following the Party for the Planet weekend that guests will be able to photograph themselves next to as a unique memory of their visit.
Giraffe are everywhere in Africa, right? These gentle giants are probably one of the most loved animals around the world and their images are widely used in artwork, children’s clothing and more. But did you know that giraffes are already extinct in at least seven African countries and that there are less than 100,000 giraffe remaining in all of Africa?
The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is at the forefront of saving giraffe’s in the wild. Join us as the Co-Directors and Co-Founders, Stephanie and Julian Fennessy, share their stories of working to save these creatures from a silent extinction.
